Lucky Me

Handsome Hubby started this tradition a little over 10 years ago... every time I've been pregnant and can't reach my toes he's offered to paint my toenails for me.
This year instead of using what I had on hand he came home from his weekly grocery shopping with a smile on his face and a new jar of bright red nail polish in his hand. He wanted my toenails to be "festive for the holidays!"

I am one lucky girl! Thank you Handsome Hubby - I Love You!!!

My Own Christmas Angel

A couple of weeks ago OTG Boy had his Christmas Orchestra Concert. As busy Christmas schedules go it was the same night as December Pack Meeting. Since I'd already promised I would not attend any more Pack Meetings until after the baby (I always seemed to have problems the next day) Handsome Hubby covered that and I decided to attempt the Orchestra Concert. We arrived a half-hour early and to my shock - not an open seat left - not even an end spot - everyone was saving it for someone else.

I was just coming to the conclusion that "Orchestra Parents" reminded me a lot of "Hockey Moms"... you know pit bulls... lipstick... strikingly familiar anyway...

when another mother, whom I have never met, tapped me on the shoulder and said, "I've been in your situation one too many times, my kids can squish come sit on our bench with us." So as I sat there, with her five kids (who were adorable, by the way), I thought about how thankful I am that Heavenly Father would send me my own Christmas angel in my time of need. She didn't know that if I couldn't find a seat I wouldn't be able to stay... but as it was she gave me the opportunity to enjoy the concert and attend my first school function of the year! Truly a blessing.

And... OTG Boy did a great job! He is an excellent cellist and I love listening to him practice everyday!

Talk Me Into It

Our Speech Homework for the Christmas (I mean Winter - I'll never get used to that) Break - is practicing the art of persuasion... not begging... persuasion.

Definitely a worthwhile activity for this time of year!

So, for the next two weeks we will be practicing how to persuade someone, without begging, demanding, shouting or losing our temper.

OTG Boy's Ornament

OTG Boy was so excited about the ornament he made in Art Class on Wednesday he wanted to show it to everyone. He made it using tin and a stylus - and obviously had a lot of fun working on it!

Piano Man on My Hands

Bubba has been begging for piano lessons for a couple of months now - he just wants to be able to play songs like his brothers. Finally, I decided hey let's go for it - we started about a month ago with some very simple lessons.
Today, he was practicing by showing me all of the "E keys" on the piano... when all of the sudden he started swaying back and forth, moving his head from side to side and broke out out singing, "My baby loves me..." then threw in a few, "down down babies," (from the playground rhyme). I couldn't believe it, Ray Charles was being channeled from the great beyond right into my living room - the only thing missing was the sunglasses!

My Time of Year

My parents tell me they brought me home from the hospital - put me under the Christmas tree - and I'd stare at the lights for hours. Maybe that's why Christmas is one of my favorite holidays! I love everything about celebrating Christmas!

Good thing I love making homemade ornaments - it can be done while sitting! I also love watching my kids make ornaments - again... perfect for sitting.

I hope you are all enjoying this holiday time of year! I absolutely love it!

Perspective

When we lived in California Handsome Hubby and I were soooooo excited to plant our very own orange tree! Having grown-up in Idaho and Utah we'd never had a tree like this and couldn't wait to see what happened.
We were so proud of our little tree when it actually produced 5 (or maybe it was 6) delicious oranges!

Then we moved to Mesa and bought a house with 3 orange trees. We still love oranges... but I have to be honest - we are so thankful our biggest tree has only about half of it's usual amount of fruit this year!

In a year that's been so busy... and I've been so unable to help... I am so thankful for a smaller harvest!
Funny how your perspective can change.

Keep It Going

It's been a few weeks since we've had speech homework, but here's the latest... how to keep a conversation going.

When someone tells you something about their day, ask a follow-up question beginning with - how, who, where, what, when, or why.

This lets the other person know that you care about what they have to say.

I Love Bubba, Too!

When The Professor saw the blog about Bubba being OTG Boy's birthday present - he said, "that's not fair... I loved Bubba when he was a baby, too! Can you please put put a picture of me with baby Bubba on the blog?"

Yes I can... here are two of my favorites!

Our Crazy B-day Week

Around 5 years ago OTG Boy got a birthday present like no other...

A Baby Brother!

Okay, Bubba was born two days before OTG Boy's Birthday, but he did come home from the hospital just in time to help wrap presents and sing Happy Birthday!

Which in case you're wondering there is definitely not a shortage of sweets, or food at HaHa's house once Birthday Season kicks in. Here's a sampling of what's happening this year.

OTG Boy had a Golfland Party with a few of his favorite friends.

It was hard to tell which they liked more - laser tag or the bumper boats! Either way, a great party for a bunch of boys with never ending energy!

Food? Pizza, soda & Cake!

Then came Bubba's Birthday!

Food? Hot Dogs & chips (his favorite meal) & cupcakes!

Next, OTG Boy's real birthday...

Food? KFC and more cake!

Follow that with our Thanksgiving feast and... I think I'm understanding why our baby-on-the-way has such chubby cheeks.

If you think we're done... hold on...

My birthday is right around the corner, followed by Christmas (and all of it's parties involving food) and finally we'll be able to slow down once we're sitting around the table enjoying our New Year's dinner of ham, black eyed peas (for good luck) and of course one last dessert!

Happy Birthday, Everyone!

Getting Closer

First Things that Come to Mind:

Bowling Ball

Tired

Sore

Slightly Nauseous (yeah - only slightly!)

Hopeful

Excited

I need to start getting things ready - I've put that off long enough!

Favorite quote from my ultra-sound last week - the tech said, "I've never seen a baby this young with such chubby cheeks!"

Just One of Many

There are so many things I am thankful for today... 2008 has been a very eventful year with more blessings than I can count. But, there is one that stands out so hugely today - I've been thanking my Heavenly Father for it in every prayer since Tuesday afternoon. I am so thankful for the blessing of Bubba's safety!

After a long visit to the doctor that morning (for me), I fed Bubba his lunch and put him on his bus for an afternoon of school. About 15 minutes later the phone rang... it was a representative from the school district's transportation department, they said, "Your son's bus has been in an accident, he's crying... he's scared... an EMT is checking on him right now... they'll give you a call in a couple of minutes and let you know what needs to happen next."

It was probably only 5 minutes at the most - but it seemed like forever. The call came... "he's got a few bumps and bruises - and pretty scared. " While talking with the firefighter, I decided I would drive over and pick-up Bubba myself.

When I arrived at the "scene" I found Bubba surrounded by six firefighters all talking about how cool his back pack was and how awesome it is to be a fireman. By this time the tears were gone and he was high-fiving everyone. They'd also been giving him a few snacks...
his prized possession?
This bottle of Gatorade!

Kids get over things a lot faster than mothers do. Bubba really wanted to go to school - he couldn't miss the Turkey Trot. So that's what he did - went to school - ran in the Turkey Trot and showed everyone the special Gatorade that he got from a real fireman.

Bubba's doing fine - just a bruised elbow and one bruised knee. The first thing he said when telling his brothers about the accident was, "Now I know why seatbelts are so important!" (Luckily, he was on a little bus - so he had the seatbelt to help keep him safe.) Then of course he was showing off what was left of the Gatorade.

As for me, I'd be perfectly fine if I never got another "your son's been in an accident" phone call again. This was my first (hopefully my last) - and I am so thankful that Bubba was safe!

Soccer All Stars

I made it to my second game of the season this last Saturday... here's a little bit of what was going on. (My pictures are taken from pretty far away - so if you want to see more detail - just click on the picture and you'll be able to see everyone a little bit better.)

Handsome Hubby Coached (he's the guy in white)...

OTG Boy played all over - this is him at forward (look for the sunglasses -that's him) - he did a great job!

The Professor has been an excellent defender this year - he's number 4 out on the field!

Bubba spent his time rolling down the hill - life doesn't get much better than that!

What did I do? I came home with a nice sunburn - that's the most sun I've had all year. Leave it to me to get my first sunburn of '08 the second to the last Saturday of November!

Thank you transition lenses!

OTG Boys was very excited to get "sports glasses" this year... now he can actually see the ball while he's playing soccer!

Lighting Up the Night

What do you think of our Christmas lights this year?

They are very economical - they light up all night and don't add a penny to our electric bill!

Really, what started out as a city employee coming by to let us know our gas-line needed some updating (since our house is about 50 years old)... has turned into quite the project.

It began with this little hole in the front of our yard... then they decided they also needed to chop our tree down...

and remove the stump.
(still working on that one)

Thanks to the help of a few neighbors our yard is now cleaned up (from tree branches -not giant holes). One loaned us a chainsaw - we now how have a pretty large pile of firewood for camping...

(Handsome Hubby had entirely too much fun with this wonderful power tool!)

...the other offered a truck and a ride to the dump (if you look close you can see it parked across the street) - not to mention several helpers from across the street helped us get the little stuff raked up and into green garbage barrels.

Thank you everyone for your help!

The biggest blessing - we've been thinking about how to redo the landscaping in our front yard ever since we moved in - thank goodness we haven't been able to do it - we've had tractors driving all over the yard for a week. Now we're extremely thankful for our not-fancy-yard and dead grass!

Unexpected Twists

I can pretty much guarantee... Handsome Hubby never thought he'd be coaching soccer. But here he is - coaching for his second year in a row (after un-officially assistant coaching a couple of years ago).

Now he's already contemplating if he wants to coach one or two teams next year!
This man is an AMAZING DAD!

Technical Difficulties

The Professor's view of the world is a little bit different from most. His peers don't understand why he's not "like everybody else." Adults are amazed at his knowledge on almost any subject. He says it like he sees it - and reacts with great emotion to the world around him.

This past Sunday, I was in Primary to help Bubba share the 12th Article of Faith - I was sitting up front with another Mom (and good friend) who was going to help her daughter give the Opening Prayer. Well, when it came time for the prayer this cute little girl wanted nothing to do with it and started to scream and cry - when the Professor stood-up in the very back row and announced to the room, "Attention, we are experiencing some technical difficulties."

My first reaction - that kind of behavior is so inappropriate! But after I analyzed the situation (as I often have to do) I realized he wasn't saying that to be silly, he wasn't saying it to hurt somebody's feelings - he was just saying, so everyone could understand, sometimes we just have "technical difficulties." If anyone knows what it is like to be overwhelmed in the situation - The Professor knows.

I admire that he puts in to practice -everyday - what he has learned in his therapies. I admire that even though the kids around him pick at him and make his day hard - he still keeps trying. I know he's not perfect (who is?), but I have seen how far he's come - each day is a lot of work for my little Professor and I admire who he is becoming - a very strong, but empathetic young man.

Dinner in a Pumpkin

I forgot - I promised a few people our traditional Halloween Dinner Recipe... so 1 week later here it is...
Dinner in a Pumpkin

Ingredients:
1 Med. Onion Chopped
1 1/2 to 2 Pounds Extra Lean Ground Beef
2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
2 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
2 Cans Chicken with White & Wild Rice Soup (Undiluted)
2 Cans Creamy Chicken Mushroom Soup (Undiluted) - or I just use Cream of Chicken b/c that's what I have on hand and it still tastes good to us
1 Can Water Chestnuts, Sliced & Drained
2 Cups Cooked Rice
1 Cup Crisp Chinese Noodles
Cashews
1 Small to Medium Pumpkin Cleaned Out

What to do:
1. Paint a face on pumpkin with permanent markers (I copied my face out of a magazine this year - I thought the winking pumpkin was really cute). Cut top off and thoroughly clean out seeds and pulp.

2. In large pan, brown ground beef and onion together. Drain any grease from pan.

3. Add soy sauce, brown sugar, chicken with rice soup, creamy chicken mushroom soup, water chestnuts and rice. Simmer for about 10 minutes.

4. To Bake in Pumpkin: Spoon meat-rice mixture into pumpkin and replace top. Place entire pumpkin with filling on a baking sheet. Bake 1 hour at 350 degrees or until the inside meat of pumpkin is tender. Remove lid and sprinkle Chinese noodles and cashews over the top.

5. Serve meat-rice casserole, and for vegetable, scoop out cooked pumpkin.

I usually have more casserole than will fit in the pumpkin - so I put the extra in a foil baking pan and freeze it to cook up later (don't put the noodles or cashews on until after you've baked it). To cook, let it thaw during the day - and cook at 350 for about 50 minutes.

Reasons

It's been a little while since we've had our speech homework... first the teacher was sick, the next week The Professor was sick and last week... well, we were so caught up in the holiday we completely forgot to do our work.

This week (and last week) we are focusing on reasons. First of all, we are working on knowing and saying our reason for why we want something to happen. So, instead of saying, "Dad, play catch with me." Make your request with a reason, "Dad, would you play catch with me because..." This helps each of us to understand why a request is important to the person making the request.

We are also discussing why it is important to understand the reasons we are asked to do certain things in our everyday lives. For instance, we are discussing the reasons behind the importance of doing chores. We also have a worksheet to discuss the reasons our Dad would ask us to close the door, if we forgot to close it, on a cold and snowy winter day (we haven't discussed this one yet, but I'm sure it will be great... the Professor is very literal... and we literally do not have cold and snowy days at our house. I can't wait to hear what he has to say about this one).

A Tooth Story

Once upon a time there was a young boy (let's say about 10) who lived on a farm. He loved horses and he loved swinging through the air - so, what could be more perfect than growing up with a horse walker in his own backyard! He'd run - grab the rope and go flying to see how far he could go. Then one fateful day, in an attempt to get the walker to go as hard and as fast as possible - he misjudged his grip and flipped the snap (for hooking up the horses to the walker) on the end of the rope right into his teeth. He was in pain - his tooth was broken off to the nerve! He went to the dentist - his tooth was reconstructed.

Fast forward 20+ years...

Handsome Hubby calls his wife - "you'll never guess what just happened."

She says, "what?"

Handsome Hubby says, "my tooth just shattered in my mouth!"

Wife says, "how!?!" (Envisioning all kinds of horrible scenarios...)

Long pause... sheepishly says,

"I bit into a granola bar."

After a few more visits to the dentist - his smile is as good as new - and just as handsome as ever!

My Coupon Man

There are about a million things I love about my Handsome Hubby. But one that's on my mind today is his love of coupons! We've always tried to be thrifty and find the best deals and soon after moving to Mesa we were talked into trying out Coupon Sense (click here for more info). At first, it was just "my thing" - I am the primary grocery shopper after all. Then, I was pregnant and on complete bed rest - he took up the shopping for me... coupons and all. Now, here we are again - me pregnant and sick - Handsome Hubby doing the shopping. The first time around - I think he just used coupons to make me happy... this time I think he enjoys the thrill of the good buy!

A few weeks ago, he was excited to come home with coupons for $13.50 off of our next shopping trip. He always saves more than he spends. Last Saturday he was completely thrilled with the purchase of his new electric toothbrush (which the dentist really thought he should have). It was on sale - the store was out - he went back with his rain check for $20 off & an extra $20 for the "extra bucks" he missed out on, put that with a $4 off coupon for spending over $20 and now we'll send in our receipt for a $15 rebate. The toothbrush also came with a promo to take a survey and get a $10 visa gift card. He thought it was the best deal ever!

He says he sees why I like coupons.

I like it when friends let me know they saw my Handsome Hubby out shopping and they were impressed he was using coupons - they ask how I talked him into it? I didn't!

I just have a wonderful husband!

Buddies!

The HOT HOT weather is finally coming to an end and playing outside is so much fun!
During the past year Bubba and the Professor have truly enjoyed playing together. Life is so much fun when you have a buddy! And even better when that buddy is your very own brother.

(Sorry, not my best pictures - but if you click on the pictures to make them larger you can see the looks of absolute pleasure on both of these boys. That's the part I love!)

A Few Days For Deep Thinking

First of all, let me clear-up a mistake I made yesterday. I said it had been exactly two weeks between Bubba being sick & The Professor coming down with... whatever it was. However, I was wrong - it's actually been three weeks. I guess time is going by faster than I thought!

Last Friday I ended-up in the hospital for a few hours of tests and observation and since then have spent a lot of time laying down, or just sitting (I have to say - staying off of your feet is highly overrated - I'd much rather be moving!) Anyway, I've had a lot of time to think and ponder and wonder about life.

We all have such different purposes and missions. Recently our prayers have been getting longer and longer. First we were praying for our baby and for me. In August, our friends, down the street, were in a small plane crash and have suffered terrible burns. Then last week, one of Handsome Hubby's dearest friends (he was the Best Man at our wedding and one of the nicest people you'll ever meet) lost his dad in a tragic gun accident. Now over the weekend, the brother of another friend has been killed in a possible car-jacking.

My first reaction is to just throw a pity party and start feeling bad about everything, but somehow you just can't do that for very long. You can't help but to start seeing the blessings - even in the middle of the trials. I am so thankful to know that we have a Father in Heaven who cares about all of us, and that the circumstances of our lives are for our good - life is not something to suffer through and just survive - with the help of our Father in Heaven and our Brother Jesus Christ we can find the beauty and possibly understand some of the reasons for what is going on around us.

If you have the time, the Sister-in-Law of our friends in the plane crash wrote this beautiful message about "Progress and Perspective" - I would highly recommend reading it. You can click here to see what she had to say.

And, just so you're not too worried - I'm doing much better since the weekend and I may even tackle cleaning the clutter pile that's built-up here on the computer desk - although, I'll have to do it sitting down - my dear Handsome Hubby has said he really doesn't want me to lift a finger for the next three months! Can a mom really do that?!?

The Professor's Turn

It's been exactly two weeks since Bubba missed school because he was sick with a fever. This week it's the Professor's turn. He missed school yesterday - stomachache & a fever. So today he's still home - waiting for that fever to be gone for 24 hours.

I think he's feeling better.

What do you think?

I'd say, definitely back to school tomorrow!

Pumpkin Muffins

Yes it's another pumpkin recipe!

Like I said we just love pumpkin at our house!
Here's the recipe:
Ingredients
1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/3 cup sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
1 beaten egg
3/4 cup milk
1/4 cup cooking oil
1/2 cup canned pumpkin
1/4 cup chopped nuts

In a mixing bowl combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg cloves and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Make a well in the center. Combine egg, milk, oil and pumpkin; add all at once to flour mixture. Stir just till moistened (batter should be lumpy). Stir in nuts (or you can do what I did and omit the nuts and add as many chocolate chips as look good to you. Sure, they're completely unhealthy, but completely yummy!). Use paper baking cups in your muffin tray & fill cups 2/3 full. Bake in a 400 degree oven about 20 minutes or till golden. Remove from pans; serve warm. Makes 10 to 12.

My tip: always double the recipe & always use chocolate chips!

We love Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins!

What Do I Do?

I've had several people ask questions about what I do when I'm feeling so sick and on my days when I have to be in bed. Here's a breakdown:

For times I've had to be completely down - at least for a few hours (which thankfully I haven't had to do for a month or two now, only occasionally when something unusual happens) my only option was either listening to something or watching TV. Usually, I just watched something - but, thanks to my wonderful "across the street neighbor" she's been my personal Blockbuster! Between her movie library and movies from her extended family - I've watched a lot of really good - uplifting movies. So I do owe a big thanks to my friend and the Hallmark movie people for helping me forget my own troubles for a few hours of the day!

On days when I just need to be taking it easy and keeping stress low - my biggest time consumers are: spending time with Bubba before he heads out to school and then working on a simple project like indexing for Family Search - this helps to add names to their searchable online index for working on family history - anyone can do it - if you'd like to learn more click here. I also spend time either reading or working on cross-stitching Christmas Stockings for my family.

This is for Handsome Hubby. I've been working on it for a long time, but finally finished it up. I'll sew it together, hopefully around December, when I'm feeling well enough to get out and enjoy searching for some fun Christmas fabrics for the back.

I'm in the middle of working on this one for OTG Boy. He is very excited and checks my progress all the time. I'm glad he thinks it's "cool" that I would make a Christmas Stocking for him.

And now that I'm keeping my food down, more often than not, I do try to get out occasionally. I attempt to make some of our dinners. And my mom will be happy to know that at least I get my bed made everyday!

And I know I say it all the time - but I just have to say it again. I am so thankful that Handsome Hubby is willing to help around the house and take care of so many extra chores! Taking care of all of us is no easy task. I love my Handsome Hubby!

Quick Pregnancy Update

Just a short note today (I haven't been feeling so great, so it's been kind of a not-do-too-much kinda day) - but, wanted to let you know I had a doctor appointment yesterday - and everything is still looking good! We are very thankful that this baby has been strong and healthy and that I haven't had to be on complete bed rest. People always ask what they can do for us - just keep praying - we really appreciate your prayers.

Our friends, were in a plane crash a couple of months ago and burned severely. I'll just use their names since they've been all over the news. Stephanie is still in a medically induced coma, but her husband Christian - has been recovering well and is now in a rehab facility - and whenever you hear what he has to say, he always talks about how much prayers help and that you can literally feel the help. I believe that - I've felt that! I'm thankful we can pray for anyone or anything, anytime, anywhere - it really does make a difference.

A Visit From the Tooth Fairy?

I'm happy to say that OTG Boy is On The Go again! Yesterday, he had the day off - and he'll be the first to say - he wished he hadn't. First thing in the morning he was at the dentist's office being prepped for a tooth extraction! He had a stubborn baby tooth that was refusing to come out - and there was no getting out of it - the dentist said it had to go.

So, after the dentist, OTG Boy spent the day at home letting the anesthesia wear off, drinking Gatorade, eating soft foods and watching Harry Potter (that part he liked).

Today, he's back in school... feeling great... and very happy to have the whole thing over with!

Stir Crazy

This last week we had October Break - translated... no school on Thursday & Friday!

Which, actually, we love - everyone needs a break! However, since I'm still not feeling super great our plans consisted of a nice long weekend at home! Not quite as exciting as the kids had hoped, but riding bikes, roller blading and watching movies can be fun... right?!?
Well, needless to say by Friday afternoon my three bundles of energy needed a diversion or they were all headed for the longest "time out" of their lives.

So, after a few minutes of thinking, grabbing a snack to help my stomach settle, and snagging some quarters out of the change jar - we headed out the door to "Dollar Tree."

We bought a white plastic tablecloth and some black yarn... here's how $2 saved the day!
First, you cut your white tablecloth into 12 pieces.
Then, you wad up a piece of newspaper
(we already have plenty of that on hand).

Next you put your paper in the center of your plastic to form a head.
Now tie your head in place with a piece of black yarn.
Then, draw scary faces on each of your creations & attach a piece of yarn on top.
Most importantly, work together to hang them outside for everyone to see...

And in the end you have 12 spooky ghosts and 3 happy boys!

Happy Halloween!
